Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers 는 대표적인 Tongue Twister (잰말놀이/빠른말놀이)로 우리나라로 따지면 간장공장 공장장 영어버전이라고 할 수 있다.

후추	고추 (매운맛)	피망, 파프리카 (단고추)
Piper nigrum 이라는 주렁주렁 달린 열매로 부터 말려서 얻어진다.	크리스토퍼 콜럼버스가 신대륙에 도착했을 때 원주민들은 유럽대륙에 없는 향신료를 가지고 있었다. 중앙아메리카에서 먹는 얼얼한 매운 맛을 내는 향신료는 pepper라는 이름으로 수입되었다.	옛 영국영어에서 fruit 은 주로 "pepper"로서 불렸다. (후추, 고추와 같은 종류의 pepper와 구분되는 명확한 어떤 것이 있었음에도) In British English the fruit is usually referred to as "a pepper" unless there was some specific to distinguish it from other types of pepper (black pepper, chilli peppers)

 

Pepper는 까만 향신료를 의미하는 그리스어 Pipari로부터 왔다. 고트족이 로마를 410년에 약탈했을 때, 5천파운드의 금과 3천 파운드의 후추를 가져갔을 만큼 향신료는 귀한 것이었다. 중세에서도 빚과 지참금은 알후추로 지불될만큼 중요했다.

Origin of name The word pepper comes from the Greek word pipari (pee-PAIR-ree) which means the black spice...but a bell pepper is green, or red or orange etc... When the Goths sacked rome in 410 AD among their demands were 5,000 pounds of gold and 3,000 pounds of black pepper. In the middle ages debts and dowries were paid with pepper corns.

 

후추(Black pepper)와 고추(Chili Pepper)는 왜 둘 다 pepper일까?

스페인의 왕과 왕비 Ferdinand and Isabella는 크리스토퍼 콜럼버스가 신대륙에서 부를 가져오길 바랬다. 콜럼버스가 중앙아메리카인 카리브지역(Caribean)에 도착했을 때 원주민들은 유럽대륙에 없는 향신료를 가지고 있었다. 탐욕에 눈이 먼 콜럼버스는 후추(Black pepper)를 원하는 스페인 왕궁을 만족시키고 돈을  벌기 위해 원주민들이 가지고 있는 매운 향신료 (chili pepper)를 Pepper라고 명명해서 싹다 수입해간다. 그 Pepper가 같은 Pepper가 아닌것을 알았음에도 불구하고 말이다.

 

Marjorie Shaffer writes in Pepper: A History of the World’s Most Influential Spice that Columbus was likely smart enough to know what he had wasn’t pepper, but that he probably didn’t care. Allspice and hot peppers headed for Europe.

 

덕분에 이 시기 Pepper는 다른 매운 향신료를 의미하는 말로 확장되어 쓰였으며, 중앙아메리카에서 먹는 얼얼한 매운 맛을 내는 향신료(할라피뇨, chil pepper)는 Pepper라는 이름으로 수입되었다.  오래지나지 않아 Chil pepper와 같은 매운 고추는 포르투갈인에 의해 아시아 지역으로 퍼졌으며, 후추와 달리 따뜻한 기후에 잘 자라서 금새 요리에 사용하게 되었다.

그리고 거기서 그녀를 잘 보관했답니다. 

 

 

비슷한 Rhyme을 가진 Peter, Peter, pumkin eater 에 관한 섬뜩한 썰이 있다. 대충 들어보면 와이프를 집에 잘 모셔두었다는 로맨틱한 의미같지만, 알고보니 Peter의 와이프는 창녀(hooker)였고, 매우 sexually active해서 수많은 남자들과 불륜을 저질렀다고 한다. 그래서 그녀를 살해하여 호박속에 넣어두었다는 이야기다.
